Assure detects multithreading errors before they cause problems
Assure is an instrumented JavaTM Virtual Machine (JVM) that, in
addition to running your Java program just like Sun's Virtual
Machine, also checks your code for multithreading errors. As your
program runs, Assure monitors its memory accesses and other events
and automatically detects situations which could cause unpredictable
multithreading-related results (thread deadlocks, thread stalls, data
race conditions, inconsistent screen updates, crashes, etc.).
Other Java development tools make you wait until after your program
crashes or throws an exception to find out that a problem exists. In
addition, the cause of the failure is usually gone by the time your
program actually displays the error. Now with Assure, you can find
problems earlier, easier, faster, and more reliably.
Assure shows you the exact location of your multithreading errors
Assure reports errors with an intuitive graphical interface. Your
source code appears in a window or windows, and Assure selects the
exact line or lines of code that were responsible for the error. It's
never been easier to detect and correct multithreaded Java errors.
Assure finds potential deadlocks before they stop your program
Assure traces all monitor lock acquisitions. When two or more threads
are holding monitor locks that another thread wants to acquire, then
the program is deadlocked. A deadlock situation requires that you are
holding one monitor lock while trying to acquire another.
Assure goes one step farther. For example, given two monitor locks
L1 and L2 consider what happens when the threads owns lock L1 while
acquiring L2 and sometimes owns lock L2 while trying to acquire L1.
If two threads attempt to acquire the locks in the opposite order,
then the program may deadlock. The relative timing of the two threads
determines if the threads are trying to acquire a lock that the other
thread already holds.
Assure detects this situation before it causes a problem with your
program. The random timing variations the program normally experiences
are ignored as Assure calculates the logical relationships between
monitor locks.
