Backup To CD-RW and Backup Made Simple are two closely related programs
developed by Willow Creek Software, each designed to meet somewhat different
backup needs. This overview first introduces the features common to both
programs, then further down it describes how they differ.
Both programs provide a simple way to make backups to CD-RW, CD-R, hard disk,
over a network, and many other devices. Both can back up and restore your
entire system, including the registry, or selectively back up and restore any
part of it.
A simple user interface lets you select which files and folders to back up, and
save this "backup type" so you can easily make the same backup again whenever
you like. Backup types are very flexible, and adapt automatically if you move
or rename files or folders, add or remove them, etc. It will use as many discs
as necessary to hold the backup, asking you to insert new discs as needed.
Both programs will copy any folders and files you want to the backup media, a
folder on a hard disk, or over a network to another computer. The software will
automatically use as many backup discs as needed to hold all your files, asking
you to insert new discs as necessary. If you are using the proprietary format
it will compress their contents to save space, and if necessary spread a file
across as many discs as necessary to hold it. This, along with some other
features such as saving and restoring the Windows registry, allows you to back
up and restore your entire hard disk with either program.
Both programs are designed for less experienced users, but there are also
options for more experienced users. You can back up recently modified files or
files with the "archive" flag set, clear the "archive" flag, automatically save
multiple backups on a disc without conflicting with each other, create several
types of log files, tell the software to wait until a specified time before
starting the backup, and use command line options instead of dialogs so backups
can be launched unattended with a scheduler utility.
Backup To CD-RW is designed to work best with CD-RW, CD-R or other high
capacity media, or if you want files to be saved on the backup as exact copies
of the originals so they can be accessed directly on the backup media without
restoring them first. Its essential feature is that by default files are stored
on the backup media as exact copies of the originals, without compression or a
proprietary format.
Backup Made Simple is designed to work well with both low and high capacity
media, if you require file compression on most backups, and if you are
satisfied with having to restore files from the backup media back to your hard
disk before you can access them. Its essential feature is that by default it
uses a proprietary file format that compresses files, and splits them across
multiple discs if necessary. It is also more convenient to use with smaller
capacity media like floppy diskettes.
Either program can be configured to work like the other if you want to tweak
all the settings appropriately. Each will also restore any backup made by the
other.
You can install both programs on the same computer. They should be installed in
the same folder if you do.
To use a CD-RW or CD-R, you must have software such as Adaptec Direct CD which
allows files to be written to the drive letter for your CD-RW or CD-R drive.
All modern CD-RW and CD-R drives are automatically installed with such
software.
Everyone should make regular backups of their important files. Backup To CD-RW
and Backup Made Simple are full featured programs to do this, but are designed
for computer users of all experience levels, including less experienced users.
All versions of the software are compatible with all versions of Windows,
including 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.
