Agent v1.0-Readme.txt

THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE!

There is a bug in the program which prevents you entering News Server, and E-mail Server information the first time it is run as a new install. You will have to use a copy of your OLD agent.ini file to run the program as a new stand alone install.

You can copy these files over your old Agent files and run this version as an upgrade.

Thanks to Trustno1 for the install password that unlocked the files. And no, I'm NOT posting that password so don't even think about asking for it.

=================================================

Welcome to the Forte Agent 1.0 beta release!

This build contains two of the three remaining features that will comprise
Agent 1.0 -- a user-configurable toolbar and MAPI support for outgoing
email. The third feature, filtering in the message pane, will be
available after the first of the year. You may notice that the
user-interface controls are implemented in this version, but no actions
specified by these controls will take place.

RELEASE NOTES
=============

Build 354
---------

User Configurable Toolbar:

Each Agent window -- browser, outbox, address book, kill/watch filters,
message composition, and log -- has toolbar buttons to make Agent easier
for you to use. With this build you can configure each of these toolbars
to include only the command buttons that *you* want included. Simply
select Options | Menus and Toolbars | Toolbars to find the dialog box for
configuring your toolbars. We hope the use of the dialog box will be
self-explanatory, but if you have any questions about how it works, please
consult the online help.

A couple of notes about this version of the toolbar implementation:

1. We have graphics for each of the toolbar buttons, but many of these are
preliminary versions. If you have suggestions for what might be
appropriate for some of the more "obscure" commands, let us know.
Please note that although all of your suggestions will be read and
considered, we may not be able to send you a personal reply.

2. In the composition window, you'll notice that the large buttons (Send
Now, Send Later, etc.) have been removed, and replaced by normal toolbar
buttons. If you prefer to have the large buttons display, go to Options |
Display Preferences | Messages, and check the box, "Show Buttons on
composition window."

MAPI:

With Build 354, you can send email from Agent through a MAPI-compliant
email system. Here's how it works:

There are new radio buttons on the User and System Profile | System
dialog, to select whether to use SMTP or MAPI to send email. Under the
"Send email messages with MAPI" radio button, the following options
control the operation of MAPI:

Address Format. Specifies how Agent should format email addresses. Most
MAPI-based email systems require that Internet addresses be formatted in a
special way to identify them as Internet addresses, as opposed to
addresses within the local email system. In the format string, the "%1"
represents the actual email address.

Login once per session. When this option is checked, Agent requires you
to login to your MAPI email system once per Agent session. If unchecked,
Agent requires you to login each time you send an email message. Note:
If you are already logged into your email system for some other reason
(for example, if you are also running your primary email program), Agent
will not require that you login again.

When MAPI email is selected, Agent operates as follows:

- If you send an email message, Agent uses the MAPI send message window
rather than its own composition window. Agent initializes the addresses
and message body as appropriate, but once it has opened the MAPI window,
Agent no longer has any control over the message. And, the sent message
is saved in your MAPI email system, not in Agent's outbox or folders.

- The Forward Verbatim option is disabled.

- Your signature is not appended to email messages. Instead, you must use
whatever signature mechanism may be provided by your MAPI email system.

- The Group Properties "Copy follow-up messages to author via email"
option is disabled.

- There is no facility for sending a message as both a news message and an
email message. For example, when MAPI is enabled, Agent ignores the Email
To: Cc: and Bcc: fields and the address book pick and check functions when
composing news messages.

- Agent will not send any pending email messages that may have been stored
in your outbox prior to enabling MAPI email. You should be sure to send
any pending messages via SMTP prior to enabling MAPI email.

Installation Program:

The 32-bit install program now checks the registry for a previously
installed copy of Agent. If it finds one, it defaults to 'Upgrade' in the
folder it finds. If you want to upgrade a different copy or do a fresh
install you can override the install program's choices.

We fixed a bug which would have left agent.exe renamed to a temporary file
name if the user began an upgrade and canceled the process while the new
exe was being installed.
