Everything in Saint Paint Studio has been designed to be easy to
use, and where appropriate compliant with features that are
common to many paint packages. During the process of playing
around with the application, it should become obvious how
everything is organized, and easy to learn new features.
Most Useful Facts
Brushes
One of Saint Paint Studio's most powerful features is it's use of
brushes! Brush refers to an object in Saint Paint that acts like an
artistÆs brush. When you draw something in Saint Paint it uses a
brush to paint with. For example, if you have a square brush
selected, when you paint on an image it will paint as if you had a
square shaped brush. Also worth noting is that if you paint with
the right mouse button, it will paint with the currently selected
background color (i.e. acting like an eraser). The brush grab tools
are a pivotal part of Saint Paint. If you haven't used them yet,
please have a go. You'll find a description of the 'Grab Square
Brush' and 'Grab Shaped Brush' in the Toolbar section (click here)
of this help file. Their power lies in the ability to grab areas of the
image, manipulate them, and paste them with ease. For example,
in a photo, if you wanted to grab someone's head and place it on
someone elses body!
Important: note that there are True Colour brushes, and a 256
colour brushes. The visibility of either of these is determined by
whether you are currently editing a True Colour image, or a
256/16/2 colour image, i.e. a 256 colour brush is only visible
(and therefore usable) when editing a 256 (or lower) colour image,
and a True Colour brush can similarly only be used when editing
True Colour images.
True Colour, 256 Colour, 16 Colour, and 2 Colour
True colour images are images that can use the maximum amount
of colours (well over 16 million different colours). 256 colour
means that the image is restricted to using a user defined palette
of 256 colours. Similarly 16 colour refers to a user defined palette
of 16 colours. 2 colour (or monochrome) means a palette of just
two colours - usually black and white, although they are editable.
Palette
A palette refers to a selection of colours that you can paint with,
much like an artistÆs palette. A palette for a True Colour image will
act exactly like an artists palette in that you can create your own
colours, use them, and then create more at will. 256/16/2 colour
images however use palettes slightly differently in that upon
changing a colour in the palette, the corresponding colour used in
the image will also change. This can be quite useful, and another
advantage of 256/16/2 colour images is that the resulting image
is alot smaller when saved to your hard drive, but the image
quality is often reduced due to the restriction of the number of
colours available.
Image
An image in Saint Paint generally refers to a picture, i.e. the
picture you are painting.
Foreground Colour
The foreground colour is the colour you paint with. By pressing the
left mouse button on an image, you can paint with this colour.
Background Colour
The background colour is primarily the transparent colour. But by
pressing the right mouse button on an image, you can paint with
this colour. Being the transparent colour means, for example, that
when you grab a brush from an image of a black circle on a white
background, if the currently selected background colour is white,
then when pasting with this brush the white colour will be invisible
(transparent), allowing you to paste a black circle without the
white surrounding it.
Batch Processing
It may not be immediately obvious, but itÆs very easy to get Saint
Paint to batch convert image file formats. Simply load the images
into an animation sequence, and then save them all back out with
a different file format. You are basically just using the animation
system as an image bank for processing.
The Paint Toolbar
The Paint Toolbar is the main vertical toolbar (2x13 buttons in
size). If in doubt or curious, just left click or right click on the tool
icons. A left mouse button click will select the tool. A right click
will generally select settings for that tool (if any). For example,
the top left button on the toolbar (The icon of a paint brush) when
left clicked will select that tool, which enables you to do freehand
drawing in your image. A right click on the button will give you a
selection of brushes to use when drawing. For more detailed help
Tool Tips
Always keep a look out for tool tips, which will appear if you pause
the cursor over any toolbar button.
The Status Bar
Pay particular attention to the status bar at the bottom of the
main Saint Paint window for extra help when selecting tools or for
menu selections.
The Menus
The menu system lists all available features. Some menus depend
on what you are currently editing. If you are editing an animation
for example, just go to the animation menu, and your animation
specific options will be listed. Whilst editing an a single image, the
animation menu is obviously not relevant, so is not shown. Other
functions such as printing options are available no matter what
you are currently editing. For more detailed help click here.
Shift and Ctrl
Very useful for aligning, having the Shift key held allows you to
lock the horizontal or vertical movement of the mouse when the
mouse cursor is on the image. The direction (horizontal or
vertical) depends on the initial mouse movement after the Shift
key is held. Having the Ctrl key held is also very useful for
aligning on the image's edges or corners. It ensures that the
brush does not leave the image area.
Images and Animations
There are two types of file editable by Saint Paint, images and
animations.
Images
These are just what you would expect, when you load a BMP or
JPG or any other supported image format, it will be loaded as an
image for editing. This will be displayed on the screen for viewing
and will be ready to edit at will.
Animations
These are simply a sequence of images. Each image in the
sequence can mostly be treated just like a normal single image,
except you can edit any of these images at will with a whole host
of extra animation controls. You can load the animations into
Saint Paint Studio by either composing it from any amount of
single images, or as an SPS, AVI or GIF. Saving the images is
similar, you can either save the images as separate images or as
an SPS, AVI (with or without any compression codecs you may
have installed on your computer) or GIF.

As decided by FFF council.
Special Notes:
---------------
On some antivirus scan, FFF releases packages can reveal "Type_Win32",
"Trojan_Type" virus. Don't be stupid, it's not a virus or anything else
like that. Just some packers/cryptors which have same binary signature.
Some crackhosts sites can modify/add malicious things on FFF
releases please take care.
