Quartet X2 is a music composition program and sequencer that
uses the MIDI section of your sound card to create polyphonic
instrumental music.
Notes are drawn on a graphical staff with a click of your
mouse. Notes can be edited as quickly as they are drawn. You
can easily switch between single and polyphonic tones from
one note to the next. The whole idea is to enable you write
complex melodies easily and quickly.
There are 12 independent channels: 8 melody channels, plus 4
percussion channels. The latter give the ability to create
background rhythms, beats and motifs, while the melody
channels are used to carry the main melody score. There are
two pallets, or "tableaux", one for creating the main melody,
and one for the percussion section. Use the "Quick Compose
Bar" at the bottom of the main interface to Switching from
one channel to another, or to assign polyphonic values to
notes or groups of notes.
Every note on every channel can generate either single notes,
or polyphonic notes (up to 4 instrumental sounds
simultaneously), in a range that covers the full spectrum of
audible tones, 10 octaves.
You can play a different instrument on every note, so you can
potentially play 150 different instruments in a single
composition.
A score drawn on the staff can be saved as a standard *.MID
file, for playing on any other program capable of playing
Midi files. Partially completed scores can be saved as *.SNG
files, (text format), and can be loaded into the program for
recording as *.MID files, *.WAV files, and converted to MP3
format.
As you gain familiarity with the intuitive interface, you
begin to see how easy it is to create virtuoso compositions
for a single instrument, group of instruments, or an entire
orchestra.
