MCAFEE SHREDDER DEMO: Demo version to Full version conversion.
VERSION: 4.01
RELEASE DATE: February, 2001
OS: Windows 95, 98, Me.

The McAfee Shredder Demo version is a nice little standalone file
shredding utility that was available as a free download from the
McAfee website in early 2001.

Although it is no longer available from McAfee it can still be downloaded
from some of the shareware sites and shouldn't be too hard to find.

As a demo version it is great for basic file shredding even though the
more advanced features are disabled...but can they be made to function ?

Yes they can!

INSTALLATION:

Run the installer by double clicking on it.
The installer extracts the contents to a setup folder,
the default setup folder being:

   "C:\Program Files\McAfee Shredder Demo Version"

From there the program is installed into the installation directory:

   "C:\Program Files\McAfee\Shredder"

CONVERSION TO FULL VERSION:

1) Go to the "C:\Program Files\McAfee\Shredder" folder and rename the files
"shredder.dll" and "shredeng.dll" to something else, for example:

   "shredder.dll.old" and "shredeng.dll.old"

Both of these files have the version number 4.01.2007.0
These are the trial version dll's.

If you get a message saying Windows cannot rename "shredeng.dll" it is
probably because you used McAfee Shredder after you last started Windows
and it is still in virtual memory. Just restart your computer and go right
to the shredder installation folder and rename the files. Don't run shredder!

2) Next go to the setup folder "C:\Program Files\McAfee Shredder Demo Version"
and extract the contents of "Data.cab". Look for two files with a long
extention made up of numbers and letters:

   F1272_shredder.dll.29A50E16_F303_11D4_BB02_00C04F8B5267
   F1304_shredeng.dll.29A50E16_F303_11D4_BB02_00C04F8B5267

3) Remove the strings of numbers and letters by renaming them to:
   shredder.dll and shredeng.dll respectively.

These are the full version dll's. Both have the version number 4.01.1007.0
the same as the "shred32.exe" file.

4) Now copy the full version dll's into the installation directory

   C:\Program Files\McAfee\Shredder

5) You can now get rid of the trial version dll's "shredder.dll.old"
   and "shredeng.dll.old" by shredding them.

6) Start shredder. Regular shredder users will notice the McAfee Utilities
box picture has been replaced with a picture of a shredding machine.

Click the shredder "Properties" button and uncheck the
"Check disk for errors before shredding" option and then click "Apply".
This feature requires Disk Minder which only comes with the complete
McAfee Utilities Suite. Apart from that you now have a fully
working, standalone version of McAfee Shredder.

You are now able to use the options that were disabled in the trial version.
In addition to erasing files and folders you can:

1) Erase free space including: - Free disk space
                               - Unused file slack
                               - Deleted file names

2) Erase an entire disk: -Completely erase your floppies.

Thank you to Network Associates for including the full version dll's as part
of the installer package ;)

(The demo version of McAfee Registry Wizard can be converted to the full
version using the same method except the file you need to replace is
"Reg.dll")
