Opening a new dimension in audio recording.
Melodyne is a programme that allows a completely new
approach to the handling of audio material. It analyzes
the pitch and time of monophonic audio files (from, for
example, singers, wind or string instruments) and offers
the opportunity to change whole melodies in a way only
previously possible at MIDI-Level.
What Melodyne can do?
Melodyne is able to change the musical parameters of
voices or instruments without any actual influence on
the character of the recording. Melodyne extracts the
pitch and the rhythm, and provides an area in which to
play with the audio material. Any change in this
material is interpreted by the software in a musically
intelligent manner and the result will always sound
natural. Working with Melodyne is as easy as editing
notes with MIDI.
Important features at a glance:
Pitch shifting and formant correction by more than an
octave are performed without affecting sound character
and velocity. New melodies can be invented with a given
material and unpleasant intonations can be corrected
with a mouse click. A change in intonation is possible
by an increase or decrease in phrasing or vibrato. A
change in formant is produced by an amplification or
diminution of the resonance volume, thus making a
trombone out of a trumpet sound or a tenor out of a
soprano voice. Flexible time-stretching allows the
acceleration or deceleration of a single note or of a
whole arrangement through the concept of local sound.
There are no limits to deceleration, and a standing
sound will be the ultimate result when velocity is zero.
Melodyne recognizes the rhythm of music, as each given
note "knows" its place within a beat. Notes can thus be
quantified automatically, and they can also be
synchronized to a reference melody with a mouse click.
Via copy and paste, a new melody can be derived from
single notes or a new arrangement can be created from
single tracks. Differences in beat will be corrected
automatically. Melodyne can handle up to 24 tracks in
real time.
What's new in Version 2.0:
MelodyneBridge (VST and AudioUnit based) allows to connect
Melodne to other DAWs as easy as it was a PlugIn
ReWire (Client and Host, works with Cubase, Logic,
DigitalPerformer. Live, Reason and ProTools)
Mixer (Inserts, EQs, AUXSends and GroupTracks added, VST and
AudioUint Effects supported, works with Prosoniq, Waves, PSP,
TCWorks and other Effect PlugIns)
MIDI (In and Out supported, allows realtime Audio to MIDI
conversion, inclusing pitch and expression)
Snychronisation (MidiClock, MTC, SMPTE)
Recording featues added (PuncIn/Out)
Enhanced User Interface (New Tools, SMPTE)
More file export options
'Shift Click andDrag' applys to all sliders now.
Graphics performance increased.
Short cuts are grouped hirarchically
Pitch Tool: New snap modes for pitch editing: "Note Step" and
"Scale Step" work similar to the present "Note Snap" and
"Scale Snap" modes, but keep the individual deviation of the
pitch curve from the note center - useful when editing more
"blue" phrasings
Pitch Align Tool: Previously, dragging the pitch curve
downward with this tool ended up in a straight pitch course.
Now it can be dragged further down, resulting in an inversion
of the pitch curve: if it has been rising before it will be
falling, vibrato is inverted etc.
Selection: Three new modes are available in the "Select" menu:
1. Select all notes between locators. 2. Invert selection,
i.e. select all notes that are currently unselected. 3.
"Select same Beat" can also be applied if multiple notes are
selected. You could, for example, select a beat pattern in a
single bar of a drum track and extend the selection pattern to
the whole track to emphasize those beats.
Paste: There is a new option when replacing notes with copy
and paste. You can replace the notes with the sound of the new
ones, but keep the pitch positions of the replaced ones.
Fast Parallel Track Copy: In the Arrangement Window, notes can
be copied to a new track while keeping the same time position
by dragging the notes to a neighbour track with the
"Alt/Option" key pressed.
Importing Soundfiles: Soundfiles can now be imported by
dragging a file from the Finder or Explorer to an open
arrangement. With this option you can control where the
soundfile should go, including the target track and the
location in time.
Exporting Soundfiles: A new option for the length of the
exported soundfiles has been added: "Individal Range for Each
Track".
The export of single tracks was overworked. The channel count
of the exported files is taken from the chosen channel count
in the mixer, the exported signal refects the fader and - if
stereo - the panorama, but does not include the EQs and Insert
effects.
Group and ReWire tracks can be exported now. Export is running
in realtime if required.
Exporting MIDI: If you want to export a Midi file in the
export panel, you can set the option either to use the Midi
data "As Specified in Tracks" with the pitch bend and
controller data specified for each track in the arrangement,
or "Quantized for Notation", which will quantize each note
start to the position that is represented by its score
notation, and will omit all pitch bend or controller data.
External MIDI hardware controller devices can be used to
control most functions available in Melodyne, like transport
control, Melodyne's mixer, or more Melodyne-specific functions
like editing pitch or formant offsets for single tracks or for
the whole arrangement. You can easily setup your own
controller mapping for your MIDI controller device. Some more
dedicated controller devices with feedback are supported by
factory presets, currently support for MackieControl,
LogicControl and Radikal SAC is implemented.
You can edit the arrangement using Midi, or you can even use
Melodyne like an instrument by playing it via Midi in realtime.
In addition to the previously existing option to export
detected melodies as a MIDI file, it is now possible to play
the detected (or edited) melodies via MIDI in realtime. The
exact pitch and envelope of the melody can be reproduced by
sending pitch bend data and expression (or volume) controller
data via MIDI. On MIDI file export, the option for exporting
pitch bend and controller data is also available.
Temporary Play Offsets Panel: Pitch and formant offset is now
available for single tracks as well.
TextFields: The arrow buttons for drag editing are omitted,
you can drag edit the value directly by clicking the text
field and dragging the mouse up or down. To edit a value
directly by typing, double click the text field.
Turning Knobs in the Mixer: Values can be changed either by
up/down or by left/right movement. A movement from lower left
to upper right will result in faster value changes, whereas a
movement from upper left to lower right will have no effect.
Dragging the knob with the "Shift" key pressed will result in
higher resolution of value changes. "Alt/Option"-clicking on a
knob (or slider) will set its value to its default position,
e.g. 0 db for amplitudes or center position for panorama.
You can display SMPTE time now in the time line of the windows
and in the transport bar. You can switch between Bars & Beats
or SMPTE display with the "Time Display" item in the new
"View" menu. The SMPTE Type (24, 25, 29.97 drop, 30) is also
determined in the "View" menu.
If you start playing after the cycle range, it will just play
on, not jump back into the cycle range like before.
The current snap grid for moving or pasting notes is
visualized now.
In the vertical ruler in the Editor Window, octave numbering
has been added at each "C" for better orientation.
To change the tone scale in "Scale Snap" mode click in the
tone name ruler on the left. To select the minor scale you now
press the shift key while clicking, not the right mouse button
as before.
In Melodyne 2.0 you can no longer have more than one copy of
the same arrangement file open at any one time.
