Loading ESRI Shape Files into Oracle Spatial Databases
Spatial Loader Advanced is Geometry's premium spatial loader
product. It derives its core functionality from Geometry's
Spatial Loader product and additionally provides
specialised functionality such as updating Oracle Spatial
metadata, implementing database constraints, supporting
feature history and versioning and allowing for coordinates
rounding by applying XY tolerance values. In short, Spatial
Loader Advanced is for the serious spatial data user or custodian.
Spatial Loader Advanced loads ESRI Shapefile data, including
attributes into an Oracle Spatial database using the Object
Relational Model. All spatial data from the shapefile is
stored in one column in the target database table,
using Oracle Spatial Objects.
Spatial Loader Advanced is a command line program, to enable
bulk and batch loading of data. The command line interface
is similar to ESRI's ArcSDE SHP2SDE program that loads
shapefile data into an ArcSDE layer. This reduces the learning
curve to those familiar with SHP2SDE, and provides a common
understanding of parameters, and what is required to
perform the task.
Spatial Loader Advanced reads in *.shp and *.dbf files, and
produces a database table that holds all of the attributes
from the .dbf file, a geometry field, and a unique identifier
field that is a requirement of Oracle Spatial. It is possible
to transfer all, none, or specific attributes from the attributes
file. These attributes can be renamed while transferring the
data from the shapefile into Oracle Spatial.
Spatial Loader Advanced has undergone significant architectural
changes since the earlier 2.x versions. Most significantly
is a redevelopment of the feature loading engine. This
redevelopment has lead to a considerable increase in speed and
has removed a memory constraint related to the size of the
shape file to be loaded. Spatial Loader Advanced will now load
shape files with an unlimited number of features and has been
tested with up to 1.5 million shapes in the one shape file.
As well as the standard Spatial Loader functions, Spatial Loader
Advanced also provides significant advanced features.
These include:
Support for maintaining history by retiring or
archiving edited features.
The ability to round the coordinates of the shapes
in the shapefile by applying the XY tolerance values
held in the SDO_GEOM_METADATA table.
This feature is very important because some editing
packages - due to double/single precision issues -
may actually move coordinates. These movements are
typically sub the precision of the actual data. By
rounding to the nominate precision it is possible to
detect situations where no actual change to the shape
(and its attributes) was made and thus not create
superfluous revisions within the database.
Re-wind the coordinates of the outer/inner shells
of polygons.
This is important, as ESRI shapefiles are agnostic on
the winding order. That is to say an outer shell's
coordinates may be listed in either clockwise or
anti-clockwise order.
Specify the primary key (UFI) column (numeric) and
an Oracle sequence, such that each new shape loaded
will have its UFI assigned from that sequence.
