Nucleus SIM is a prototyping environment that enables you to build embedded
applications on a development host such as Microsoft Windows , prior to
embedding on target hardware. The majority of our customers purchase
Nucleus SIM products and use them to begin developing their embedded
applications as soon as they receive the software. The Nucleus RTOS and
Nucleus Middleware executing within the Nucleus SIM prototyping environment
are every bit as powerful and flexible as their embedded equivalents
because they use the same code. Applications developed with Nucleus SIM can
easily be ported to the target hardware when it is available. Since there
is little to no difference between the Nucleus SIM version of our products
and the actual embedded products, while prototyping, you are using the same
software you will eventually embed in your target.
Another advantage to using Nucleus SIM is that even if hardware is
available, you are not dependent upon it. This can be useful for large
teams of engineers where hardware is in short supply. This feature is also
great when it becomes necessary to show your product to your customers. You
are able to demonstrate the product without carrying around bulky hardware
while eliminating the risk of hardware failure from your demonstrations.
It should be noted that Nucleus SIM is not an instruction set simulator
(ISS). While an ISS is a useful tool, which is why we also offer those as
add-on products to our XRAY debugger, Nucleus SIM overcomes one of the
major limitations of an ISS. That is, how do you simulate your peripherals
(e.g. RS232, Ethernet)? By providing simulation models for each of these
peripherals, Nucleus SIM allows you to simulate your entire software
system. Also, Nucleus SIM is orders of magnitude faster than an ISS.
Development & Debugging
Nucleus SIM was designed and developed to work with Microsoft Visual C++
tools. The standard Visual C++ debugger can be used to debug the
application. By using the project files supplied with Nucleus SIM, you can
be up and running immediately. A demonstration program shipped with Nucleus
SIM exercises most Nucleus capabilities. By reviewing this program, you can
quickly become familiar with the Nucleus PLUS programming environment. To
start your own development, you can modify the demonstration program or
replace it with your own Nucleus compliant application.
Development and debugging in the Nucleus SIM environment is faster than
with target hardware. Even if hardware is available, it is easier to
develop and debug in Nucleus SIM because you don t have to download the
code to the target every time you need to debug.
Kernel-Aware Debugging Support
Kernel-aware debugging support reduces system complexity by allowing you to
debug and tune your applications at the task level. By using standard
Microsoft Visual Studio plug-ins, we can give you a complete view of all
kernel objects in the system at any time. With the added capability of
task-dependent breakpoints, you have access to one of the most complete
kernel-aware debugging environments available anywhere.
