     It never fails and it's happened to me more then once I am sorry to 
    say. You go to your storage cabinet or supply room for a particular 
    consumable supply item and at the moment you pull it out to issue to 
    some individual in urgent need of it you realize with a sinking feeling
    in your stomach that the shelf life of the item in question has expired
    and you have no replacements which aren't in the same sad state.
    
    Lets back up a bit here for those either new or oblivious to the 
    subject. First of all what is a shelf life item? It is any item which 
    you receive from the federal or defense supply system which has an 
    expiration date or, if you will, a "throw away" date, which the product
    cannot be used beyond. Examples would be medical supplies, paints, 
    package petroleum, oils and lubricant's (POL), NBC, certain types of 
    repair parts and the list stretches on almost endlessly. The average 
    supply operation, including yours, will have tens, hundreds, or 
    possibly even thousands, of such items in stock or on hand. Once a 
    shelf life item has been unpacked from it's shipping box and put on the
    shelf it unfortunately is often forgotten till it's needed at which 
    time you find yourself in the predicament I described above.
    
    How can we stop this situation from happening and keep track of all 
    those shelf life type items that the average organization has on hand?
     What is needed is a powerful LAN capable database software tool which 
    the average organizational supply or logistics person can easily use to
    monitor these finite shelf life items, and to let them know when they 
    need to order replacement items before the ones they have on hand have 
    expired.  VisMSISM is that software tool and will work for anyone who 
    uses the U.S. federal or military supply system!
    
    The concept of operation of VisMSISM is both simple and elegant. All 
    you have to do when you receive a new shelf life item from the supply 
    system item is just enter the few bits of required information into 
    VisMSISM for that item before you put it into storage and from that 
    point forward you will always know what the status of the item is and 
    know when you have to inspect or replace it - before it has expired.
