Backup To DVD/CD and Backup Made Simple will save anything on your
hard drive to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-RW, CD-R, a hard
drive folder, ZIP drive, or almost any other device. Both programs
allow multiple backup discs so you can back up unlimited amounts of
data, can compress files on the backup to save space, let you
select what to back up with an intuitive user interface, let you
run backups unattended when nobody is using the computer, and much
more.
Use either program to back up your Outlook emails, Microsoft Word
documents, digital photos, MP3's, Quicken financial data, or almost
anything else. Back up your total system including the Windows
registry, or any part of it.
Our software can also write backups that are readable directly in
Windows Explorer and other programs, without having to restore them
to your hard drive first. So you can browse digital photo archives
just by dropping in the backup disc, etc.
Both programs come with the Backup Plan Wizard and DVD/CD Writer
Wizard, to help you get up and running quickly and easily. The
Backup Plan Wizard helps you tell the software what exactly you
want to back up, without requiring you to understand where
everything is stored on your hard drive. The DVD/CD Writer Wizard
will make sure your DVD/CD writer is set up properly to work with
the backup software, and help you resolve any problems you may have
with it.
Each program is designed to meet somewhat different backup needs.
This overview first introduces the features common to both
programs, then further down it describes how they differ.
Both programs provide a simple way to make backups to the different
flavors of DVD, CD-RW, CD-R, hard disk, over a network, and many
other devices. Both can back up and restore your entire system,
including the registry, or selectively back up and restore any part
of it.
A simple user interface lets you select which files and folders to
back up, and save this "backup plan" so you can easily make the
same backup again whenever you like. Backup plans are very
flexible, and adapt automatically if you move or rename files or
folders, add or remove them, etc. It will use as many discs as
necessary to hold the backup, asking you to insert new discs as

Both programs will copy any folders and files you want to the
backup media, a folder on a hard disk, or over a network to another
computer. The software will automatically use as many backup discs
as needed to hold all your files, asking you to insert new discs as
necessary. If you are using the proprietary format it will compress
their contents to save space, and if necessary spread a file across
as many discs as necessary to hold it. This, along with some other
features such as saving and restoring the Windows registry, allows
you to back up and restore your entire hard disk with either
program.
Both programs are designed for less experienced users, but there
are also options for more experienced users. You can back up
recently modified files or files with the "archive" flag set, clear
the "archive" flag, automatically save multiple backups on a disc
without conflicting with each other, create several types of log
files, tell the software to wait until a specified time before
starting the backup, and use command line options instead of
dialogs so backups can be launched unattended with a scheduler
utility.
Backup To DVD/CD is designed to work best with DVD, CD-RW, CD-R and
other high capacity media, or if you want files to be saved on the
backup as exact copies of the originals so they can be accessed
directly on the backup media without restoring them first. Its
essential feature is that by default files are stored on the backup
media as exact copies of the originals, without compression or a
proprietary format.
