1. READ THIS FIRST !!!
This is the first official release of PC-STIR. It could only
be tested with several programs and some improvements may be
necessary. Please do not complain, inform (see below).
Be ensured: PC-STIR is designed not to write any file to your
Hard Disk. It is a patcher and so will modify files but all
patches can be removed at any time. So if you once will have
a problem with a patched file: run PC-STIR a second time on
that file and you are able to remove the patches by a simple
mouse click...

PC-STIR is written in VB3 and needs to have installed
in your Windows System:
THREED.VBX CMDIALOG.VBX VBRUN300.DLL

2. Installation of PC-STIR
Just unpack the ZIP to wherever you want and create a Link
to PC-STIR.EXE
Ensure to have the above mentioned VisualBasic files in your
Windows or System directory. PC-STIR will run in any Windows
version but Striling programs usually are 32-bit progs. So
PC-STIR only makes sense in Windows 95 or NT.

4. Use of PC-STIR
First step is always: install the downloaded program and run
it a first time. PC-STIR only works if the program was properly
installed. If you run a Stirling protected program you will
see a typical startup screen:
Logos "RSA" and "Try And Buy", some text and a buttons like
"Try", "Buy", "Cancel"... You cannot run a Stirling protected
Software without a registration. Also the trial requires an
online connection to get a temporary key. When you came so far
click on the Cancel button. Now its time to use PC-STIR.
Before running PC-STIR you should know name and location of
the Program you want to "buy". Use the property function
of the Program Icon (right mouse click) or use the Explorer
or File Manager to check the folders on your harddisk.
Now start PC-STIR. Click on "Open File". Select the appropriate
drive and folder as usual to find the Program you want to
register. When found click OK and PC-STIR immediately will
scan the selected Program. Read the info in the status line
at the bottom of PC-STIR. There are 3 possible messages:
1. The prog is NOT detected as Stirling type - NO patch possible
2. The prog is detected as Stirling type - a patch is possible
3. The prog is detected as previously patched Stirling type - the
patch can be removed.
If the second message appears, click on the now enabled "Patch"
button and you are done. Run the prog as registered and forever.
If there are problems run PC-STIR again on the same prog. You will
see the third message. Click on the now enabled "Unpatch" button
and your prog is turned back to the original.
If a prog is not detected as a Stirling type, first ensure to have
selected the right file. Finally make a note (see below).

5. Critical remarks on the Stirling protection
Stirling protection is a rather complex system wasting a lot
of Hard Disk space. After the first installation of a Stirling
protected program some ugly stuff is installed:
- a subfolder Windows\TechWave\Safe\...
- a collection of Keys in the Registry
- for each installed program a subfolder (default into TEMP)
The subfolder "TechWave" must NEVER be deleted, otherwise no
Stirling program will run. The entries in the Registry maybe
deleted but it is not recommended.
All folders in TEMP can be deleted after the program runs. That
stuff is no longer required.
Whenever a Stirling program is installed a Registration Tool is
started in the background. If you try to close it will run still
for a long time, searching on the complete Hard Disk for Stirling
programs. A very annyoing process...
Finally Stirling is designed to create a lot of Keys, Subkeys
and License Files.
If you ever set your clock foreward and back Stirling will have
problems sometimes.
Compared to other Lockers like SalesAgent or Unbox it is rather
uncomfortable. Anyway it is not more safe, otherwise a crack
was not possible... So it is your decission to "infect" your
system with a lot of Stirling stuff.
PC-STIR will not do so: no entries to the Registry, no temporary
files. Just a clean tool to let run a horrible locked prog.

6. FAQ - Troubleshooting
Q: Why is PC-STIR a patcher and not a KeyGen ?
A: A registration scheme could not be found yet. If so another
tool will be made. A patch maybe the better choice because a
true registration will create more annoying keys...
Q: What to do with a registered program which still requires
a Serial Number ?
A: That cannot be handled by PC-STIR. Please give feedback
on such programs. Often a special crack has to be done.
Q: My TMP or TEMP folder is more and more filled with a lot of
stuff after registration of several Programs.
A: Is not a subject of PC-STIR but a bad "side effect" of
"Stirling". As soon as a prog runs properly the temporary
stuff can be deleted. That stuff in the TEMP or TMP folder
is not required for a later un-install.
Q: PC-STIR does not work in Windows NT !
A: It is approved to work with NT 4.0 (build 1381). Mainly
the VB modules mentioned above are missing. They should be
located in the SYSTEM folder of Win NT. Very seldom reported
problems with VB3 progs in Windows NT could never be clarified.
Write to MS Billy...
Q: Is there no problem with long File Names ?
A: Not yet observed for File names. But if a folder has a long
name it maybe be not possible to select. If so copy the file
to be patched in a temporary folder and later back.
Q: I get messages of wrong Version or Language for a VBX or
DLL file when starting PC-STIR.
A: Make a copy of your VB3 modules and try other Versions.
Q: I have a Program with similar Registration Dialog but
PC-STIR does not work.
A: Check wether it is a locker from "SalesAgent" or Unbox.
For that use the other available "Tools":
- UBXWIN for Unbox
- PC-RSAG for Try and Buy (SalesAgent)
- PC-RSBUY for BUY only (SalesAgent)
Q: Does PC-STIR also work with BUY progs or only with TryAndBuy ?
A: Not tested, but if only the Try function is disabled it should
work.
Q: What should I do if nothing works ?
A: Write down all info displayed, Program Name, WEB Page
where to get from. The more details the better. Post the
request on Usenet "crack" pages, KeyWord "PC-STIR".
