Use bump-mapping and ambient occlusion per-pixel shading to simulate very
detailed environments and characters with very few polygons !
This plug-in lets you to create normal maps and ambient occlusion maps
very easily, by generating them from low-detail and high-detail versions
of a single mesh. The process is automatic, highly configurable, and you
can preview the result directly inside 3DS Max, with high quality
Parallax-mapping rendering.
This bump-mapping technique uses the graphics card to compute the
interaction between the light and your mesh on a per-pixel basis. In
addition to the classical color parameters and texture maps, you need an
additionnal texture which stores the normal vectors in each texel.
Such normal maps were traditionnaly obtained from height-maps created by
2D artists. Such content is quite difficult to edit, so it was essentially
used to creates simple bumps on the surfaces, hence the name of the
technique.
Now that most GPUs are able to do bump-mapping efficiently with
programmable shaders and lots of memory, programmers are using this
technique to simulate complex geometry with very few polygons, especially
for skinned characters which demand a lot of vertex processing.
The LXS Bump-o-matic is a very simple and fast tool which generates normal
maps for you. You supply low-detail and high-detail versions of a single
mesh. Using the generated normal map, your low-poly mesh will look just
like the high-detail version. Provided that you use a big enough texture,
you cannot see the difference between the two versions, except for edges,
because the lighting cannot create geometry in the empty space.
The bump-o-matic plug-in for 3DS Max is very easy to use, and faster than
other similar tools. Its control panel is available from the utility
category. Moreover, you can preview the results directly inside a 3DS Max
viewport, which makes it unique. Via the viewport menu, you only need one
click to select the LXS Bump-o-matic extended view. You can let the view
open and refresh it as you modify your meshes, fast updates provide you
almost interactive edition. The artists can use it freely and efficiently
as it does not require expensive processes of saving files and running
custom tools.

The process is based on ray casting between the two meshes. From here, it
is highly configurable, from very fast previews to high quality
supersampled bitmaps, or to handle special cases for your mesh. Here are

* Super sampling = multiple rays per texel: 1,2,3,4,5,9,13,17,21,24
and 37x.
* Configurable Dilation filter to expand the borders for proper
hardware mip-mapping.
* Generate the normals in Tangent Space for animated meshes like
characters or Object Space.
* Maximum ray distance between the two meshes.
* Cut-off angle, to avoid singularities
* Choose ray-casting to front and/or back
* Intersection preference: closest, 'frontest' or 'backest'
